Alestorm – Back Through Time

- “Captain, there be Vikings off the starboard bow!”

- “ATTACK!!!”

It’s time to grab some pints of rum and have a blast with Alestorm’s latest CD, Back Through Time.

This time around the pirates have sailed through a portal and time traveled back to the days of the Vikings, and kicking some Viking ass in the process.  Of course, the other songs on the album involve the usual pirate tales of adventure, plunder, and (of course) heavy drinking.

When you combine Norse mythology, Vikings, and pirate folklore, you get an amazing combination.  And for the most part, Alestorm’s Back Through Time delivers!

Alestorm - Back Through Time

Back Through Time starts out with a bang with the song, “Back Through Time.”

The pirates discover a mystic portal and sail back through time, putting them face-to-face with Norway’s Vikings.  The pirates’ superior firepower decimates the Viking ships.  No prisoners are taken, and the remaining Vikings begging for mercy have their throats cut.

Epic stuff.  But that’s where the fun starts in this awesome music album.

Alestorm’s Back Through Time – “Shipwrecked” music video

“Shipwrecked” tells the tale of a seafarer joining a captain’s crew with promise of “adventure and glory.”  Two weeks into the trip the ship strikes a hidden reef, and all hands go into the sea.  The seafarer in the tale hangs onto a piece of driftwood and soon finds himself washed ashore on a deserted island.

And there on the island he has stayed for three years, waiting for rescue or death, whichever arrives first.  It’s a bleak tale but awesome song in the end.

“The Sunk’n Norwegian” is a great drinking-themed song and one of my favorite on the CD.  It ranks up there with “Barrett’s Privateers” and “Back Through Time.”

As far as the rest of the CD, “Barrett’s Privateers” is my favorite, “Midget Saw” and “Swashbuckled” are pretty good, “Death Throes of the Terrorsquid” is just plain cool.

The limited edition version of Back Through Time includes two bonus tracks: “I am a Cider Drinker,” and “You Are a Pirate,” both of which are pretty good.

Perhaps the best news is that Alestorm’s world tour involves a visit to Atlanta, GA on August 26th.  The aren’t the headline act (booooooooo!), but I still can’t wait to see the show!  It’s going to be awesome!

In the meantime . . .

God damn them all!

I was told we’d cruise the seas for American gold.

We’d fire no guns — shed no tears.

Now I’m a broken man on a Halifax pier,

the last of Barrett’s privateers.

Avast!
